I was thinking this morning about how yesterday I added 1,700 words to my sci fi love story, but ripped out 1,800 words of an unnecessary scene written earlier that really had to go. It was hard getting rid of the words, but I knew the scene was totally out of place in the story due to plot changes, and so, it just needed to go.
This made me think: editing is like sculpting. Both the writer and the sculptor chip away at their creation and polish it until it’s a thing of beauty. The only difference is that the sculptor doesn’t have to completely create a marble block from thin air first before they get to work on it!
